Freedom of press

Dear Editor,
Murder of journalist Santanu Bhowmick in Tripura while covering an agitation and recent killing of Gauri Lankesh is unacceptable. They have paid a heavy price for the fundamental right of freedom of expression with their own lives.
In this materialistic world where people are hankering over 3Ps – Power, Prosperity and Paisa indulging in every kind of malpractice, it is the 4th P- the Press which brings these malpractices to notice.
Often the journalists and press photographers, the upholders of justice, who serve the society by exposing the injustice done to victims so that speedy justice is ensured to them, have to bear the brunt of humiliation, torture and imprisonment and even death.
Sometimes controlled & pressurized by corporates, political bigwigs, yet the spirited journalists provide a fair judgment on issues thus maintaining their sanctity and social responsibility and educate & enlighten the silent listeners and make them vigilant towards creating a more civilised and prosperous Society. Mahatma Gandhi said “Freedom of the press is a precious privilege that no country can forgo.”
Yours,
