In a landmark judgment the Supreme Court today ruled that technical education cannot be provided through correspondence courses. The Apex Court restrained educational institutions from providing courses in technical education like engineering through distance learning programme. It affirmed findings of Punjab & Haryana High Court on the issue. Two years ago, the Punjab and Haryana high court ruled that a degree in ‘computer science’ obtained through distance mode could not be considered on par with one attained by attending regular classes. The judgment of apex court should be properly implemented across the country.
Technical Education plays a vital role in human resource development of the country by creating skilled manpower, enhancing industrial productivity and improving the quality of life of its people. It requires lot of practical training and therefore it becomes necessary for the students to attend classes regularly. The acquiring of technical degree through correspondence course will seriously compromise the quality of education. The government of Arunachal should take cue from the apex court judgment and ensure that no person manages to get job by acquiring technical degree through correspondence course. The proper implementation of the SC judgment will secure the future of the country and state.
