Floods death toll rises to five with recovery of two more bodies

ITANAGAR, Sep 15: The death toll in Friday’s floods has risen to five, following the discovery of two more bodies on Saturday.
The body of Modirijo resident Rigio Tagung (55), who was untraceable after the floods hit the area on Friday, was retrieved from Harmutty in Assam by the locals there at around 8.30 am on Saturday.
A report received on late Saturday night from the capital complex DIPRO said the body of one of the other two missing persons from Modirjio area, 32-year-old Mary Beyong, was also retrieved from the river near Nepali Gaon No 2 in Pitaguri in Lakhimpur district of Assam by a team of Banderdewa police and NDRF personnel.
The area is located about 8 kms from Banderdewa.
The body of 10-year-old Pungpi Beyong, also from Modirijo, remains untraced. Officials informed that a joint team of police and NDRF personnel is continuing the search.

Relief materials distributed

Earlier on Saturday, Itanagar MLA Techi Kaso and Capital DC Prince Dhawan distributed relief materials including food items to the families affected by Friday’s flashflood near the bridge point in Modirijo.
Kaso advised the residents to remain alert, describing Friday’s incident as “an eye-opener for all of us.”
“So many incidents in a single night were witnessed for the first time in 40-45 years,” Kaso said, and urged the people to refrain from building houses in vulnerable areas, and to shift to safer locations.
The DC also urged the people to refrain from residing in vulnerable areas.
He informed about the schools that have been temporarily designated as relief shelters. He also informed about the toll free number, 1077, of the emergency operating centre.
The MLA and the DC also distributed relief materials to the affected families in Donyi Polo Colony.
A medical team led by Dr Kabak Tamar provided first-aid and conducted health check-ups and laboratory tests for waterborne disease among the injured patients in Modirijo and Donyi Polo Colony.
A mobile ambulance has also been activated for any medical emergency.
The DC informed that the families of those who lost their lives would be provided with ex gratia after due procedure.
