SAGALEE, Dec 3: Arunachal Pradesh Mahila Congress (APMCC) president Nabam Yakum called upon the government to recognize the contribution of women in the agriculture sector.
The APMCC president said this during the inauguration programme of a series of ‘Shelter Festival’ in various villages under Sagalee constituency of Papum Pare district on Monday.
“The festival is not only to celebrate the harvesting of the first fruit, but also shows the hardship that women have contributed in the field,” said an APMCC in a release.
Highlighting the contribution of the women to agriculture and allied sector, the release stated that 33 percent of those invisible women cultivators and
47 percent of women agricultural laborers are behind the million tonnes of agricultural production in the country.
AICC general secretary Kim S Haokip, who also is the in-charge of APMCC, stated that women need to create a platform where they can share their farming knowledge and ideas on farming technologies.
Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Mina Toko said that women farmers are not given equal access to resources and technical assistance as compared to men.
“There is vast gender division of labour in the field of agriculture. Many women labour are unpaid and victimized of economic and labour exploitation,” the APCC spokesperson said.
Stating that the women and young girls are trafficked for labour exploitation, she called upon women to rise to the occasion and take up the issue with the appropriate authorities.
