The state police have managed to arrest the two persons accused of being involved in the killing of gaon burah (GB) Bengia Tamang in a poll-related violence at Taba village under the Koloriang assembly constituency in Kurung Kumey district. This is a big breakthrough and, hopefully, it will help ease the tension in the area. Kurung Kumey and Kra Daadi districts have been witnessing intense poll-related violence. The situation is still tense, especially in Koloriang and Tali assembly constituencies. The government officials, including security personnel, magistrates and election officials, have done a remarkable job in conducting polls in the two districts despite all odds.
Even in the midst of the hostile situation, with candidates and their supporters virtually at war, the officials have so far done an admirable job of conducting the polls. Apart from the hostility from public, they had to battle rough terrain and difficult weather conditions. In some areas the security personnel and election officials had to walk for days, crossing hostile terrain, to reach the polling booths. At present also, the situation in Koloriang and Tali continues to remain tense. The officials have to be constantly on their toes to tackle any eventuality. It is not an easy job to conduct poll in such a hostile situation. The local people should extend cooperation, so that the election process ends peacefully and the people can move on with their lives.
