The total number of Covid-19 cases in India today increased to 46,711 after 3,875 fresh Covid-19 cases emerged in the last 24 hours, as per the latest update from the ministry of health and family welfare. The death toll in the country also rose by 194 to 1,583 since yesterday. The 3,900 new Covid-19 cases and 195 fatalities reported in the last 24 hours is the highest increase in a single day in the country. Meanwhile, among the total number of cases, Maharashtra continues to be the hardest-hit state, followed by Gujarat and Delhi.
India is under lockdown till 17 May, though the areas under the ‘green zone’ have been given some relaxation.
The lockdown which is in place since 24 March midnight was imposed to stop the spread of the Covid-19. With the number of cases increasing with each passing day, one wonders whether it has brought the desired effect. There is no doubt that the lockdown has given ample time to the authorities to prepare for the Covid 19. It is going to be long battle and people will have to play an important role in this regard. With the number of cases rising, there is no clarity over how it is happening despite the strict lockdown.
Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Tuesday claimed that India has, so far, been able to stave-off community transmission of Covid-19. However, experts believe that community transmission is happening in some parts of the country and have cited the example of Mumbai where there has been rapid rise in cases. The government of India should clarify and maintain transparency at this critical juncture.
