High IMR in Arunachal

Dear Editor,
The registrar general of India’s office in its sample registration system bulletin released the latest data set on the infant mortality rate (IMR). While the country has seen an improvement in the IMR rate from 50 to 32 per 1,000 live births in the last decade, one state that stood out was Arunachal, which stood last among the small states with an IMR of 37, which was miles away from the best performing state in the country, where the figure stood at four only.
IMR is widely accepted as the crude scenario of the health of a region, and as such we in Arunachal have much to be concerned about. The government should study what our neighbors in Nagaland are doing right and should adopt the best practice from there.
Sincerely,
Gida Sima,
Itanagar
