Editor,
Today social media has become an integral part of our lives. It has revolutionised the way we communicate, share information, and express our opinions. However, the rise of social media has also brought with it certain challenges, particularly when it comes to the influence it exerts on people’s actions. Many individuals find themselves swayed by the pressure created by social media, leading them to make decisions based on the comments and opinions they encounter online.
One of the key issues stemming from social media pressure is the inclination to be driven by the opinions of others, particularly when these opinions come from fake accounts or trolls. While the majority of comments on social media platforms may be positive, there is often a tendency for individuals to pay more attention to negative feedback. It is as if the opinions of a few dissenting voices hold more weight and significance. This inclination can lead to a distortion of reality, as the negative comments might not represent the broader sentiment or the majority opinion.
It is essential for individuals to recognise the fallacy of this disproportionate emphasis on negative feedback. Responding solely to the 10 percent of negative comments, while disregarding the 90 percent of positive ones, is an unhealthy pattern. It is crucial to show maturity in understanding that it is impossible to please everyone. Seeking validation or basing actions solely on the opinions of others can hinder personal growth and authenticity.
Furthermore, social media provides a platform for individuals to express their opinions anonymously through fake accounts. This anonymity often allows people to exhibit their true nature without the fear of repercussions. By utilising a fake account, individuals may feel empowered to express bold and unfiltered feelings that they might otherwise suppress under their real identities. However, it is important to note that the same individuals who confidently voice their opinions through fake accounts may not exhibit the same boldness when using their genuine profiles.
When people use their actual accounts, they tend to consider various factors such as legal implications, societal norms, and the potential impact on others. This consideration reflects a level of responsibility and maturity in understanding the consequences of their words and actions. While the raw and unfiltered nature of fake accounts may provide a glimpse into people’s true feelings, it is crucial to recognise that the absence of accountability and thoughtfulness associated with anonymity can also lead to harmful behaviours, such as cyberbullying or spreading misinformation.
