Editor,
The recent news of the brutal rape and murder in West Bengal has left the nation in shock and pain. This heinous crime is widely condemned, with demands for speedy justice and questions raised about law and order. The victim’s soul cannot rest in peace, haunted by the terrible nightmare. We demand swift justice for her, though it cannot bring back her life or erase her family’s pain.
The maximum punishment under the law, even without legal representation, is essential. Publicly shaming the criminals, akin to “an eye for an eye,” may offer some relief to the victim’s family. This approach could create fear, deter others from committing such crimes, and reduce crime in our country. If not addressed, reports of rape and murder will continue to plague children and women.
Our government must enact laws ensuring swift punishment and providing security and freedom for children, women and the vulnerable. The prevalence of unpunished crimes against these groups underscores the need for immediate action.
