Editor,
The scorching temperatures this year, particularly in contrast to last year’s relatively mild September, are no coincidence but a direct result of environmental negligence.
Itanagar, once known for its cool and pleasant September weather, unlike in the 1990s, is now facing unbearable heat due to rapid deforestation, unchecked urbanisation and improper town planning. The green cover is being stripped away to make room for concrete buildings, without any regard for the environmental impact. This relentless clearing of forests, both within and around the city, is crippling Itanagar’s natural ability to moderate its temperature.
What is more disheartening is the fact that people continue to express shock over the rising temperatures, saying things like, “Aya! Itna bhayanak garam hai. Itna garam hai!” These statements, while true, reflect a sense of helplessness, when in reality, we all know exactly why this is happening. It’s as if people are aware of the cause, but are still unwilling to change their behaviour. It’s like returning to one’s own vomit – repeating the same mistakes, knowing full well the consequences.
The situation calls for immediate action. If rampant deforestation continues and concrete structures are prioritised over natural green spaces, the climate will soon reach a point of no return, where recovery becomes nearly impossible.
Urgent efforts are needed to implement stricter environmental regulations, initiate afforestation programs, and embrace sustainable urban planning to restore balance before it’s too late. The doomsday is not far behind when there will be no more winter after decades.
