Finally, Arunachal’s contribution to nation-building is getting recognized through various events being conducted in the state. Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein recently flagged off a cycling expedition to the border town of Namti from Namsai. The expedition is part of the month-long 62nd Walong Day celebrations organized by the Indian army in collaboration with state government, to pay homage to the sacrifice of the soldiers who fought valiantly during the Battle of Walong during the 1962 Sino-Indian War. Many locals also lost their lives in the battle of Walong. It is a very good gesture on the part of the Indian army to organize such an event to remind the nation about the supreme sacrifice made during the battle of Walong. Situated near LAC, Walong in Anjaw district witnessed a bloodied battle between Indian and Chinese soldiers.
Another event that drew the people’s attention was the celebration of the inaugural Martyrs’ Day at the 1962 State War Memorial Park in Neelam village in Keyi Panyor district on 20 October. Tributes were paid to the valiant soldiers who gave their lives during the 1962 Chinese aggression, with a special focus on Sepoy Neelam Tebi of the 5 Assam Rifles. He is believed to be the only soldier from Arunachal to have made the ultimate sacrifice at Kenzamane Post, Tawang sector, on 20 October 1962. A war memorial being constructed in his name is a very good way to pay homage to him. The supreme sacrifice made by the Arunachalis in the 62 war is getting recognized which is a good move.
