The Arunachal Chamber of Commerce & Industries (ACCI) has highlighted a very important issue of how Indigo Airlines monopolizes air service in the state. Ever since the Donyi Polo airport in Hollongi started operation, Indigo has been operating long-distance flight services to Delhi and Kolkata. For whatever reason the other airlines have not started operations from this airport. This is strange because there is heavy traffic volume and often Hollongi to Kolkata and Hollongi to Delhi flights are filled with passengers.
Due to this, the prices of tickets on these routes have soared, making it extremely uncomfortable for the air travellers. Apart from high ticket prices, Indigo is also failing to connect more cities with Itanagar. There was talk of starting direct flights from Hollongi to Delhi daily, which has not happened. Further, despite huge demand, no direct flight service has been started from Hollongi to connect cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, etc. The state government should seek the intervention of the ministry of civil aviation in this regard. Other private airlines should be invited to start flight services, so that there is a competitive pricing of tickets. Also, the Airports Authority of India should fast-track the work on the construction of a permanent terminal at the Hollongi airport.
