The queer community from AP QueerStation met with the Social Justice, Empowerment, and Tribal Affairs (SJETA) Minister Kento Jini, presenting a list of issues that require the government’s attention.
Led by AP QueerStation founder Sawang Wangchha, they submitted a list of proposals, including advocacy and workshop programmes on the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act. This is because there is limited knowledge of the Act, which leads to inefficiencies in its implementation and inadequate support for the community.
The queer community also requested government assistance for sensitisation and awareness programmes, as well as support for organising an annual queer event in June to celebrate the Pride Month, as such initiatives are vital for the queer community in the state.
The government must ensure that support is extended to the queer community. It is the responsibility of the state to ensure equality for all. Inclusive policies need to be in place. The community already faces many challenges from various quarters. It will take time for society to evolve, but it is also time to be tolerant and learn to be inclusive. There is no place for wilful ignorance.
