The process of installing boundary pillars has begun along the interstate border between Arunachal Pradesh’ Pakke-Kessang district and Assam’s Biswanath district, signalling a major step towards boundary peace.

The process, which is being monitored by officials from both states, along with representatives of the Centre and the Survey of India, is the outcome of talks between the two states, which had long been at loggerheads over claims and counterclaims.

The construction of the pillars signals that both states are willing to work towards peace. The communities on both sides deserve credit for making peace a reality.

The Namsai Declaration of July 2022 was a major stepping stone towards creating a conducive border atmosphere, as it facilitated the formation of regional committees comprising ministers and officials from both sides. These committees conducted joint field visits, examined historical records, and interacted with local communities before finalising the boundaries. This was a significant and commendable move.
