Veteran Cup begins

Naharalgun United draw with Laba FC 0-0 in opener

ITANAGAR, Sep 2: Defending champion Naharalgun United FC (NUFC) and Laba FC (LFC) played out a goalless draw to share points in the opening match of the 5th State Level Veteran Cup Football Tournament (31 year and older) at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Naharlagun on Saturday.
The match started on a promising note and was evenly poised till the end.
Some smart goalkeeping and missed opportunities saved the day for both the teams; otherwise the match could have gone either way.
Though few older players succumbed to fatigue at the end and did not have much energy to control the ball efficiently, the match remained close throughout.
Earlier, PHED Minister Bamang Felix said win and loss are part and parcel of any game.
“Winning is not everything. All that matters is participation,” he said. Felix urged the players to motivate the young players in sports.
Later, he hoisted the tournament flag.
Capital Complex Deputy Commissioner Prince Dhawan, Director of Sports Tadar Appa, Sports Authority of Arunachal Chairman Bamang Tago, among others, attended the opening ceremony.
Two matches will be held on Sunday. While Siang Highlanders will play against East Kameng FA at 12.30, Arunachal United FC will be up against Doimukh FC at 2.30 pm.
