PASIGHAT, Jan 12: Thirty farmers from Rina and Koyu villages of Lower Siang district were taken to commercial vegetable farms located in Jampani area and various apiculture, sericulture and mushroom production units in East Siang on a two-day exposure visit organized by the East Siang Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) from 11 January.
On the first day of the visit, the farmers were exposed to commercial cultivation of Rabi vegetables, such as potato, tomato, brinjal, cabbage, cauliflower, etc, in the fields of the farmers in Jampani area.
Tate Saroh, a progressive farmer from Jampani village, highlighted the farm’s activities, income, planning, and the difficulties faced by the farmers in raising vegetable garden.
The farmers also had an opportunity to handle silkworm, honeybees, beekeeping tools and Eri silkworm at the State Sericulture and Apiculture farm located in Sille, under the Industries & Textiles department.
At Sille village, O Gao shared her experience on oyster mushroom cultivation, housing, market demand, economic return, and scope for large scale mushroom cultivation in the district.
On the second day, the farmers visited various demonstration and production units such as rainwater harvesting, oil palm cultivation, mushroom spawn production, poly house, nurseries, floriculture and diary units of the College of Horticulture and Forestry and the East Siang KVK, located at the instructional farm of the KVK.
The farmers also received hands-on training on vermicompost techniques.
The objective behind the exposure visit was to acquaint the progressive farmers with the latest technologies available at the College of Horticulture and Forestry, and the East Siang KVK.
