In a huge development just months before the 2024 general election, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar on Tuesday announced his decision to resign from the top post. Pawar announced his resignation, citing his advanced age. He is 83 years old. The decision created political upheaval as it came amidst reports that his nephew Ajit Pawar is trying to take a section of the NCP with him and become part of the BJP-Shinde Sena government in Maharashtra.
However, by evening Pawar did agree to “rethink” his shock decision of stepping down from the top post and sought a few days to make the decision. Sharad Pawar is considered to be one of the shrewdest politicians of India. He played an important role in stitching the alliance of Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress which ran a successful government under the MVA until the rebellion in the Shiv Sena. Many believe he can play an important role in the 2024 general election to unite the opposition parties. Therefore his decision to resign as the NCP president has shocked many.
Some political analysts believe he is paving way for his nephew to take over the party and align with the BJP, while others think he is flexing his muscle and trying to show Ajit Pawar that he is still the boss. Whatever may be, it is difficult what Sharad Pawar actually wants. He is a wily old politician and always keeps his card close to his chest. In the coming days things will get clearer. Wait and watch his next move.
