The recent incident of the personal security officer (PSO) of Environment & Forests Minister Wangki Lowang opening fire in a public place is deeply disturbing. The constable, identified as Bijoy Dodum, opened fire from his service gun in a resort in Deomali in Tirap district. He reportedly got into an altercation with some locals, after which he fired five rounds from his service rifle. The video of incident went viral in the social media, causing much anger and anguish among the citizens. The incident raises serious question over the professionalism and conduct of the police personnel in the state.
Allegations of dereliction of duty by police personnel keep coming from across the state. Many police personnel have also been caught indulging in drug peddling. These kinds of acts not only harm the image of entire police organization but also are unfair to those who are genuinely performing their duties with utmost sincerity. Constable Bijoy Dodum was filmed indulging in a violent act, and therefore there was action against him and a public glare. But there are so many unreported incidents of violence done by the men in uniform on innocent public. To avoid such incident the police personnel should be given proper training. Also, random checks should be conducted to ensure that they remain drug- and alcohol-free during the duty time.
