Upper Siang farmers urged to adopt double cropping system

YINGKIONG, 25 Nov: Upper Siang deputy commissioner Talo Jerang  has exhorted the farmers to take up  double cropping system on pilot project and to experience its multiple benefits. Jerang was addressing the farmers, mostly from Simong village, during a one-day training-cum-awareness program, organized by agriculture department for farmers on ‘organic farming and double cropping system,’  at the integrated farming system (IFS) farm of progressive farmer Onyok Tekseng here on Monday.

“Upper Siang has huge potential for double cropping which needs to be explored and tapped systematically for the greater benefits of farmers,” he said.

Citing the example of Ziro valley farmers where paddy-cum-fish culture is being done successfully, DC said that “double cropping practice not only provide huge benefits to the farmers, at the same time, it is becoming a center of attraction for tourists across the globe which in turn is a  great source of sustainable income generation for local denizens.”

DC also commended the effort of progressive farmers Totok Libang and Onyok Tekseng saying that both are torch bearers in the integrated farming system in the district and role models for youths who are taking interest in farming. Jerang advised the young farmers to acquire farming knowledge and ideas from the progressive farmers, besides taking technical inputs from various allied departments. He also asked agri and allied departments and KVK to provide timely guidance and necessary support to farmers.

Highlighting the initiatives of the central government to boost dairy sector through cooperative model he urged the farmers to cooperate with animal husbandry, veterinary and dairy department in the district “to form its first dairy cooperative society in Upper Siang for socio-economic development of farmers.”

District horticulture officer Oter Gao, DVO Dr. Emo Lego and DFDO Kago Tamang apprised the farmers about facilities provided by their respective departments.

Resource person KVK Piyusk R. Pandey explained the benefits of double cropping and organic farming.

Upper Siang unit ABK president Katan Kombo, progressive farmer Onyok Tekseng and district agriculture officer Dana Moyong also spoke on the occasion. (DIPRO)
