Editor,
I am writing to share a concern about the admission criteria at Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU), which I believe could use a bit of flexibility to support students with diverse academic interests.
Recently, UGC Chairman Prof Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar tweeted on X that UG and PG aspirants can seek admission in any discipline, irrespective of the subject previously studied. In my case, after completing BSc in zoology, I realised my interests had shifted towards the humanities, particularly political science. Inspired by this passion, I pursued a master’s degree in the subject.
However, when I enquired with the department of political Science at RGU, I was informed that students with a BSc background are not eligible to apply for a master’s degree in political science. I strongly feel that such restrictions are unnecessary and counterproductive, as they prevent capable and passionate individuals from pursuing their academic interests.
Universities like Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Delhi University (DU) allow students to transition between disciplines, provided they meet the eligibility criteria and perform well in entrance examinations. I believe RGU should adopt a similar approach to encourage interdisciplinary learning and provide equal opportunities to all students, irrespective of their undergraduate background.
I respectfully request that the university consider amending its prospectus to allow students from diverse academic backgrounds to apply for courses outside their primary discipline, provided they meet the required standards. This change would align with the broader goals of the national education policy, which emphasises flexibility and inclusivity in higher education.
