Siang DA launches COTPA enforcement drive

BOLENG, 20 Jun: In an effort to curb tobacco use and enforce the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, the Siang district administration has launched a series of awareness-cum-enforcement drives in the district through active block-level anti-drug committees.

In Boleng, a team of officials led by EAC Shanti Mize conducted an unannounced raid on targeted shops found violating Section 6 of the COTPA, which prohibits the sale of tobacco products within 100 yards of educational institutions.

Several shopkeepers who were found violating the provisions of the Act were penalized, and the tobacco items seized during the raids were destroyed on the spot.

In Rumgong, ADC Kesang P Goiba spearheaded an awareness and enforcement campaign that included a coordination meeting with the District School Safety Squad, education officials, and teaching staff.

Awareness sessions were conducted for students and local vendors, highlighting the health risk involved in tobacco consumption and the importance of compliance.

In Kaying, a similar drive was carried out by the block anti-drug team comprising EAC Pooza Sonam, police officials, ArSRLM representatives, BRCC, CRCC, and members of the ABK and ABAK.

The team sensitized the public to Section 6 of COTPA, and urged the people to ensure community-level vigilance to protect school zones.

Pangin town also witnessed a coordinated raid and awareness drive led by Town Magistrate Niyang Pertin, with support from Medical Superintendent Dr Tonu Taki and the officer-in-charge of the Pangin police station.

Violating shops were penalized, and tobacco products were confiscated and destroyed. Awareness sessions were also held for students and vendors.

Deputy Commissioner PN Thungon reaffirmed the district’s commitment to strict COTPA enforcement.

“These drives are not just about penalties – they are about creating lasting awareness and behavioural change. Community participation and inter-departmental coordination are key (to achieve the goal of tobacco-free Siang),” he said, and urged the citizens and vendors to support the vision of a tobacco-free district.
