TAWANG, Aug 2: The 5th edition of the Dorjee Khandu Memorial District Level Badminton Championship got underway at Monyul Sports Club here on Thursday.
In his inaugural address, local MLA Tsering Tashi fondly remembered Khandu’s love of and contribution to the sport. He informed that the Badminton Association of India is also starting an All India Senior Badminton Championship in the late leader’s memory.
Tashi reflected on the commitment of the present government to encourage sports activities in the state by providing employment opportunities and cash incentives to meritorious sportspersons.
The MLA requested the sports clubs of the district to explore ways to attract budding youths and hone their skills through coaching and training camps.
The championship, being organized by the Monyul Sports Club, has 110 players and 83 teams participating. (DIPRO)
