ITANAGAR, Aug 31: The Papum Pare unit of Arunachal Pradesh Police rescued an abducted minor girl from Assam, following an FIR lodged in the Sagalee Police Station by the victim’s brother.
In a press statement, Papum Pare Superintendent of Police Tumme Amo informed that on Wednesday at about 8.30 PM, an FIR was received from a Junior Teacher of Sagalee Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS), claiming that one Md Sahidul Islam, a labourer at GHSS Sagalee had abducted his minor sister,aged around 10 years, on August 24, 2017 and forcibly took her to his village in Assam.
A case was registered with Sagalee Police Station under section 363/376 IPC R/W 6 of POCSO Act, 2012.
After thorough discussion of source inputs and information about the location of the accused with Officers in-charge of Sagalee and Doimukh police stations, SP Amo immediately constituted a team with Doimukh Police Station OC, Inspector B Tangzang and other officials, and rushed to Silonibari under Lakhimpur Police Station in Assam on Thursday.
The team rescued the girl and arrested accused Md Sahidul Islam, aged 22 years, from his house at village Orang No. 1 in Silonibari, Lakhimpur, Assam.
Reportedly, on August 24 last, the accused called the victim from Sagalee. He then abducted her from Banderdewa and took her to his home in Silonibari, Lakhimpur.
On August 28, he allegedly entered into a marriage with the minor girl at Lakhimpur by changing the victim’s name to Sahiba Begam and claimed that she was 19 years of age. The young girl was also made to convert from Christianity to Islam by the accused.
The accused was produced before the court which has currently sent him to 14 days of judicial custody.
The police team was also assisted by ASI Nabam Tate I/C Khola Camp Naka, Lady/NK T Ajo Licha, CT T Buddha, IRBN CT, Dorjee Phurpa and CT D Basar.
The police said that minor girls are becoming soft targets of such criminals, and asked parents, teachers, media and all NGOs to be vigilant of such lures by perpetrators and subsequent elopement.
