Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Tuesday while attending a rally organized by the youth wing of BJP claimed that he is against the trend of candidates being elected unopposed in parliamentary or assembly elections. His statement is quite irony considering the fact that it was his father late Dorjee Khandu, the former Chief Minister of state who started this culture of winning election without a fight. Infact Pema Khandu himself has been elected twice unopposed from the Mukto assembly constituency. In 2014 assembly election a whopping 14 candidates were declared winner unopposed.
In most of the cases the opposition candidates were compromised with the lure of power and money. It is good to know that CM is against this culture. Hopefully he will stand true to his words and will not intimidate or try to buy out the opposition candidates in his home district of Tawang. The district sends three MLAs to state assembly of which Tawang MLA Tsering Tashi is his elder brother while Lumla MLA Jambey Tashi is cousin brother. The election process is one of the most important parts of the democracy. It gives chance to the voters to elect the candidates of their choice. Therefore when this opportunity is taken away from the people, it deprives them of basic fundamental right. Also the people should teach a lesson to those candidates who ends up compromising with the ruling establishment for their personal benefits.
