The controversial Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Satya Pal Malik has once again landed himself in trouble. As per the report in media, efforts are being reportedly made to simplify the rules to grant Permanent Residency in the state. Governor has written to administrative officials seeking their input in this regard. The Permanent Residency Status is linked to the Constitution’s Article 35A — which grants the state its special status and has been challenged in the Supreme Court. It classifies people who are eligible as permanent residents in Jammu and Kashmir and enjoy special rights and privileges.
This is a very sensitive issue in the Kashmir Valley. The move of Governor is being challenged by the political parties of valley. Ever since being appointed as Governor of J&K, Satya Pal Malik has taken several decisions which have potential to cause harm to the stability of the state. His decision to dissolve assembly caused massive controversy. He also caused much embarrassment to centre by stating that central government wanted Sajjad Lone to form government and he opposed it principally. J&K needs a Governor who is sensitive to the issues concerning the state. It is a unique state in compare to rest of the country. For years India has been battling terrorism and separatism in the valley. With state being mostly under President Rule, the role of Governor is very crucial. One wrong decision can undo the years of hard work to bring peace in the valley.
