Plight of flood affected farmers

Dear Editor,
After the flood water of Tewai river wreaked havoc during August last, the River Tillaw too flooded the nearby areas and destroyed the paddy field of more than 200 households on September 10. According to the flood affected farmers of Wanu village under Kanubari PS in Longding district, it will take more than a decade to restore the paddy fields, till then, they might be facing the food crisis.
After restriction on shifting cultivation by the Government, the WRC field was the only source of livelihood for the farmers. Now, their mainstay has also been completely destroyed by the recent flood.
Observing the plight of the farmers, a team of Longding District Students’ Union (LDSU) led by Tingo Wangsu, (protocol) inspected the damages site. The team was also informed by the villagers that concerned department was informed about the damages caused earlier by the flood but no action has been taken so far. However, Tingo Wangsu assured the farmers to extend their full support and appeal the concerned authority to compensate the victims at the earliest.
Now the flood affected villagers are hopefully looking forward for some practical solutions to the recurring flood and hope that with the intervention of MLA Gabriel D. Wangsu and LDSU, flood victims will be compensated. The villagers are also showering praises on LDSU team for their visit.
Yours,
Ngampha Wangjen
