ITANAGAR, Feb 19: Running events themed ‘Run for sports’ – an initiative of the sports department to promote sports and develop the sports culture among the younger generation – are being organized throughout the state.
As part of the initiative, a marathon was organized for both the sexes in Hawai, the district headquarters of Anjaw, on 19 February.
Deputy Commissioner Mamata Riba, who flagged off the race, spoke about the importance of playing sports in people’s daily life.
The winners of the race in the women’s category were Elushi Ngi (1st), Dibanlu Bellai (2nd) and Jinanlu Ngadong (3rd).
In the men’s section, Nisamso Pul won the first position, followed by Bithemso Ngi and Ruwatso Tawsik in second and third position respectively.
A similar mini marathon was also organized in Lower Subansiri HQ Ziro by the district sports office.
The 10-km race, which started at the government higher secondary school in Hapoli and ended in Old Ziro, was flagged off by EAC Mokar Riba and saw the participation of people from all walks of life.
Mudang Omo and Tayo Rini won the race in the men’s and the women’s section respectively.
In Tirap HQ Khonsa, the mini marathon was flagged off by Deputy Commissioner PN Thungon.
Kokai Pansa of GHSS, Khonsa took 43 minutes to finish and win the race in the men’s section, and in the women’s section, the winner was Nyiniam Aboh of Kheti village. She took 48 minutes.
The event on 19 February was organized by the sports department, in collaboration with district administration.
