NAHARLAGUN, Mar 23: A 12-member sport climbing team from the state is going to participate in the forthcoming North East Open Sport Climbing Competition to be held at Guwahati (Assam) from 24 March.
The team is being led by the Sports & Youth Affairs Directorate’s adventure cell in-charge Kangabam Romeo Metei, coach Kison Tekseng, and assistant coach Tem Tapung.
During the flag-off ceremony held at Sangey Lhaden Sports Academy in Chimpu on Thursday, Arunachal Sport Climbing Association president Sikka Gapak described the participants as “ambassadors of the state,” and encouraged them to give their best.
“Make it happen. Do not just think about winning medals but do your best,” he called out.
Gapak also motivated the participants to prepare themselves for the Tokyo Olympics, 2020.
Meetei said sport climbing is still in its infancy in the state, but expressed hope that many medals would be won in this field.
“The last time we won medals in this field was when there was no climbing wall here. We have lots of potential. Our girls and boys are born climbers,” he said.
