APCC accuses Centre of weakening SC/ST Act

ITANAGAR, Apr 3: Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Takam Sanjoy accused the Centre of weakening the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act by not arguing effectively against the Supreme Court’s recent verdict banning automatic arrest and registration of criminal cases under the SC/ST Act.
The Centre did not represent the case properly before the court and preferred to remain silent after the court’s verdict, which has exposed the government’s lackadaisical attitude towards the welfare of the SCs and the STs, the APCC president said.
Sanjoy urged the Centre to either bring an amendment to the said law or file a curative petition before the SC to safeguard the interests of the SCs, the STs and other underprivileged sections of the society.
