ITANAGAR, May 7: A 25-year-old student has allegedly been raped by her neighbour on the night of 30 March at E-Sector here.
The accused is the Finance and Accounts Officer of the Tourism department.
According to the FIR filed by the victim at the women police station here, she was invited by the accused at around 10.30 pm at Hotel Serenity, which is in the same building as the rented apartments. When she refused, he forced into her rented room and tried to molest and assault her. When the victim shouted and called out for help, he apologized and left.
However, the accused continued to make phone calls her from his room and asked her to come so that he could apologise again. When she went to confront him for his behaviour, Norbu, who was reportedly drunk, bolted the door and gagged her before she could shout for help and raped her.
The victim said that she got herself admitted to the RK Mission Hospital the next day.
In her statement to the police, the young woman said that the alleged perpetrator apologized again in the presence of his cousin brother, a policeman and her friend on 3 April.
“I was told not to file complaint and that he would compensate me with whatever demands I place before him”, her statement read.
Similarly, several other persons came to convince and allegedly threaten her and her parents to “settle the matter amicably”.
She finally filed an FIR on 28 April at the women police station here.
Meanwhile, the North East Human Rights Organization (NEHRO) has appealed to the capital unit police to immediately arrest the accused and take further legal action.
Capital Superintendent of Police Sagar Singh Khalsi informed this daily that they have received a complaint against the accused, who is absconding at the moment.
“The police are investigating the matter and he will soon be apprehended”, the SP said.
There are also reports that the accused is applying for anticipatory bail.
The perpetrator was unavailable for a comment on the allegation.
