NGOPOK, Jul 28: Over 300 saplings of different varieties were planted on the outskirts of Ngopok village and at the upper primary school here in East Siang district during a plantation drive organised by the All Mebo Constituency Students’ Union (AMCSU) in collaboration with RFO Obang Tayeng.
Head gaon burah Maliyang Perme advised planting more trees to protect the area from floods and to solve the problem of water scarcity as well, while AMCSU president Jing Borang appealed to the villagers to “go for a green Ngopok” and begin afforestation activities for the benefit of future generations.
All East Siang District Students’ Union (AESDSU) president Oyin Yosung described the recent report of some parts of East Siang touching 40 degrees Celsius as “very alarming,” and said plantation drives would minimize the problem of global warming. AESDSU secretary general Tonong Darang advised the villagers to throw mango and jackfruit seeds in the wasteland to increase forest coverage.
The plantation programme was attended by villagers, SMC members, public leaders, and staff and students of the upper primary school.
