NAMSAI, Aug 4: As many as 113 farmers and 10 gaon burahs benefited from an ‘awareness-cum-input distribution programme for doubling farmers’ income’ organized by the Namsai KVK here on Saturday, under the Krishi Kalyan Abhiyan (KKA).
The programme also aimed at raising awareness on the importance of scientific practices in agriculture and allied areas.
Ten jalkunds for water harvesting structure, 10 sprayers, bio-pesticides, bio-fertilizer, waste decomposer, 473 soil health cards and 7000 lemongrass saplings were also distributed among the farmers.
ICAR NE Region’s state centre’s joint director Dr H Kalita highlighted the issue of climatic change and the importance of jalkund as a water harvesting structure during dry spells, while principal scientist from ICAR NE Region, Dr KK Baruah explained the effects of climate change on farm animal reproduction “and control measures through hormonal intervention.”
Namsai DVO Dr Keshav Sharmah spoke on upgrading dairy animals, and development of cluster for dairy farming and milk processing to improve milk-production potential of dairy animals and farmers’ income.
The NABARD’s Itanagar branch General Manager Gyanendra Mani spoke on the farmer-friendly schemes sponsored by the central and state governments.
He spoke extensively on crop and livestock insurance, Krishi Samooh Yojana, use of solar light in agriculture, and starting agri-clinic and agri-business by unemployed youths.
Namsai DC RK Sharma also encouraged farmers and rural youths to adopt scientific practices of agriculture and start businesses to become self-employed and provide employment to others.
Col Vikram Narwade of the Madras Regiment explained the slogan ‘Jai jawan, jai kisan’ and the importance of both elements for the country, and Col Ivan Singh of the Assam Rifles shared his experience of successful implementation of integrated farming system in Wardha district of Maharashtra.
ICAR NE Region Director Dr Narendra Prakash elucidated the role of new techniques to improve the production of agricultural and horticultural crops, as well as livestock, of Namsai district.
KVK SMS Dr Santosh Kumar presented the progress report on KKA.
