SIMONG, Aug 13: Fifty farmers participated in a kisan goshti organized by the Upper Siang Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) at Simong village on 9 August to encourage the farmers to go organic.
ADO Ameng Nangkar informed the farmers that a pilot project on organic farming under the PKVY would be taken up during 2018-19 and Simong village has been selected for it.
He highlighted the importance of organic farming, its potential to uplift the rural economy, and the methodology of organic certification.
ADO (HQ) M Ete advised the farmers to take the advantage of the government sponsored scheme and make Simong an organic village. He also advised them against using chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
ATMA PD AD Panggam urged the farmers to take a pledge that no chemical would be used in their agriculture fields at any cost. He appealed to the senior leaders, GBs and farmers to cooperate with the department in proper implementation of the PKVY.
Progressive farmers Tadum Libang suggested that all the WRC fields under Simong village should be included under the programme. He said the department concerned, the district administration and the farmers’ representatives should jointly monitor the implementation of the programme in order to make Upper Siang an organic district.
