RONO HILLS, Nov 11: The first inter-club state level boxing championship got underway at Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) here in Papum Pare district on Sunday.
A boxing arena of the university’s physical education department (PED) was also inaugurated on the occasion.
Attending the opening ceremony, RGU Vice Chancellor Prof Saket Kushwaha reiterated the role of the university in the development of human resources – be it in sports or academic fields.
The VC was all praise for the people of the state for their simplicity, and said the youths of the state can do well in the field of sports.
Sports Authority of Arunachal Chairman Bamang Tago said RGU is the first among the universities in the Northeast to have a boxing arena.
He informed the about the provisions to develop sports infrastructure under the ‘Khelo India’ programme of the youth affairs & sports ministry, and urged the university to avail it through the proper channel.
RGU Registrar Prof Tomo Riba, PED Head Dr Anil Mili, Arunachal Amateur Boxing Association secretary general Dr Tadang Minu, faculty members of the PED, deans, and a host of boxing lovers attended the programme.
Seventy-seven pugilists from seven boxing clubs are participating in the four-day event.
