Stone crushers, illegal mining banned

PASIGHAT, Nov 12: The East Siang district administration has issued an order to shut down all the stone crusher units and illegal mining in the district.
In the wake of public complaints over reckless operation of stone crushers and collection of minor minerals, the mines & minerals secretary earlier this month visited several sites in the district and found that both licenced and unlicenced stone crushers were being used to rampantly mine boulders, sand and gravel even beyond the notified mining quarries.
The administration said the ban is being put in place to protect the district from further erosion by the Siang river.
The order said there is every likelihood of breaching and erosion of the banks of the Siang river due to illegal mining of minor minerals, which it said would directly threat human habitations in the district.
