ITANAGAR, Mar 30: National People’s Party (NPP) worker Jaley Anna was killed by suspected members of the NCSN (IM) in Tirap district on Friday.
Anna and another person, identified as Khamney Aboh, were picked up from Kheti village late evening on Friday by suspected members of the NCSN (IM).
An hour later, the two badly injured persons were dropped back at the village, and the villagers took them to the hospital. But 52-year-old Anna soon passed away.
Before he died, however, Anna identified his assaulters as one Eli Ketok of the NSCN (IM) and his group.
Ketok is also from Kheti village.
An FIR has been lodged at the Khonsa police station, but so far no arrests have been made.
Meanwhile, the NPP has issued a press statement strongly condemning the killing of Anna.
State NPP vice president Nima Sangey Saling urged all the political parties not to involve any kind of underground elements in electoral politics and instead try to gain the sympathy of the people through hard work and connectivity with the grassroots people, “with a clear vision for the state’s development, and peace and harmony in the society.”
“The National People’s Party Arunachal Pradesh shares the pain and sorrow with the family members and relatives of late Jaley Anna. His untimely death is a great loss to the society, and we pray to the almighty to bestow enough strength to the bereaved family in their hour of grief. We also pray for early recovery of Khamney Aboh, who is currently in a critical condition in the hospital,” the statement read.
Conrad Sangma, the chief of the NPP, tweeted that he was saddened at the death of the party worker, and extended his condolences to the bereaved family.
“May we learn to respect each other and fight election in its true spirit,” the Meghalaya chief minister added.
Presently, two candidates – Tirong Aboh from the NPP and Phawang Lowang from the BJP – are contesting for the Khonsa West constituency.
