LANGAITENG, Apr 30: Sixty unemployed youths – 30 each from Bongkhar and Mogto circles – underwent a month-long skill development training programme on handmade paper-making which concluded here in Tawang district on Tuesday.
The programme, which had begun on 6 March, was conducted by NGO Yuva Arunachal, under the supervision of the district industries centre.
The Monpa tribe of Arunachal Pradesh is known for making handmade papers since time immemorial. The paper is prepared from the bark of a plant called Daphne papyracea (Shugu sheng in the local dialect), but the traditional art is slowly dying with the passage of time. The training programme was conducted to ensure that the traditional way of paper-making continues.
The training was imparted by two master trainers and two assistant trainers.
During the valedictory function, District Planning Officer Sangha Babung and Assistant District Industries Director Tsering Drema motivated the trainees, and later distributed certificates to the trainees. (DIPRO)
