RGU observes World Mental Health Day

RONO HILLS, Oct 11: Rajiv Gandhi University’s (RGU) psychology department and NSS cell jointly observed the World Mental Health Day (WMHD). This year’s theme of the WMHD was ‘Mental health promotion and suicide prevention’.
Various awareness activities were conducted by the MA psychology students on Thursday in Doimukh and the RGU campus. The daylong event included poster presentations on various mental health issues, a street play on suicide prevention, and open discussions with the audience to promote mental health.
The event targeted various groups of people, ranging from school and university students in the RGU campus to the general public in the Doimukh market and taxi stand.
The team also performed awareness acts for the workers residing in the university premises. It made the audience aware of the various resources and help centres available in the state, such as the Midpu Mental Health Centre, the TRIHMS, and RGU’s psychology department.
The psychology HoD (in-charge) said suicide is a common phenomenon in the state, and highlighted the importance of not stigmatizing mental health issues.
She also highlighted “the loss of societal resources through youth suicides,” and encouraged people to realize that “reaching out for help is the right option, and not ending their lives.”
