In a first of its kind, the Cabinet Committee for Infrastructure (CCI) on Monday approved the proposal for introducing 10 electric buses between Itanagar and Naharlagun on a pilot basis. This is a path-breaking step initiated by the state government. With the Itanagar-Naharlagun road being upgraded to four-lane standards, the introduction of electric buses can play a pivotal role in reducing the traffic congestion as well as the pollution level. One of the main reasons for traffic congestion in the capital complex is the lack of a vibrant and quality public transport system.
Most of the present public transport services operating in the capital complex are of very poor quality. If there is better quality bus service which runs on time, the people may start using them and avoid using personal vehicles. The state government should encourage the people to use public transport services frequently. The CCI further earmarked Rs 1100 crore for upgrading the road infrastructure in the capital complex and all district headquarters, besides establishing road connectivity to all ADC and SDO headquarters, over the next three years. This is another step in the right direction. The Pema Khandu government is finally realizing that road connectivity is the most important aspect for the development of any state or country. The renewed focus on developing the road infrastructure will definitely yield positive results. However, the government should strictly monitor the work, so that quality is not compromised and the works are completed on time.
