The state health task force (SHTF) after reviewing the Covid-19 situation in the ICR and East Siang on Friday decided against imposing a lockdown. The deputy commissioners of both the ICR and East Siang had recommended imposing a lockdown. The SHTF took the decision after observing that the positivity rate and the bed occupancy ratio display a slight upward trend but are yet to reach the threshold limits warranting enhanced containment measures. There was chaos and confusion on Friday as a letter recommending lockdown issued by ICR DC Talo Potom was leaked to the public. Rumours of lockdown started and people started panicking.
Some started fleeing to districts, while panic buying also started. The ICR witnessed massive traffic snarls. In future, to avoid such a situation, there should be better coordination between the DC’s office and the SHTF. The deputy commissioners should also be careful while seeking imposition of lockdown. Reckless imposition of lockdown can be counterproductive. It should be the last resort. Before going for a lockdown, different ways to contain the spread of the virus should be explored. The capital police for the last two days have launched a strong drive against people who are violating Covid SOPs. This kind of initiative is appreciated. The administration should explore various possibilities before recommending a complete lockdown. It is a well known fact that complete lockdown is very harsh and poor people suffer a lot.
