SEPPA, 4 Apr: The East Kameng police recently arrested one Niso Miji (70), of Lada, in connection with manufacturing illegal firearms for hunting and other purposes, and recovered one country-made pistol and a toolbox used for manufacturing firearms from his possession.
A suo moto case [No 09/2022 u/s 25 (1) (a) of Arms Act, 1959] has been registered against him.
“During the course of investigation, Miji accepted that he manufactured arms and sold them for Rs 10,000-15,000. He was served 41 A CrPC notice, keeping his medical condition in mind,” East Kameng SP Rahul Gupta said.
Five more firearms were recovered from the area over five days by a team comprising Seppa PS OC Inspector Sochi Don, Khenewa PS OC Shakti Lamgu, and Constables Marham Doka, Senia Yangfo and Shankar Taniang, under the supervision of the SP.
The police then shifted focus to convincing the villagers to voluntarily surrender their weapons and never purchase illegally manufactured arms.
The SP, along with Circle Officer Mem Ejing organised an arms surrender campaign in Lada circle, with the support of the GBs and CBOs, during which 36 firearms were surrendered on 30 March.
The total recoveries comprise one toolbox from Niso Miji, six country-made arms, and 36 arms deposited at the Seppa police station after being surrendered by the locals.
“A total of four persons have been served 41 A CrPC notice,” the SP said. Besides Niso Miji, the other three have been identified as Fesham Rapung, Afio Sonam, and Kadai Miji (for possessing illegal firearms).
“This campaign will lead to eradicating the manufacturing of illegal firearms and will also protect wildlife of the pristine forests,” the SP said, adding that further investigation is on to make more such recoveries. (DIPRO)
