DIRANG, 12 Aug: Twenty-five Brokpas from nine yak rearing villages in West Kameng district participated in a two-day skill development programme (SDP) organised by the National Research Centre on Yak (NRCY) here recently.
The programme, which was organised in collaboration with the Arunachal Pradesh Yak Herders & Products Development Cooperative Society, was aimed at acquainting the yak herders with how to generate income through yak products, especially chitpa jhamu (the five-pronged cap worn by the Brokpas) and chamar (a yak fibre product with huge market demand).
“The technical input for the programme was provided by the NRCY under the patronage of its Director Dr Mihir Sarkar, and the resource persons included a 76-year-old woman from Pangma village, who is an expert in the art of making chitpa jhamu, while chamar-making was taught to the participants by the yak herders who previously attended a similar SDP organised by the NRCY,” the research centre informed in a release.
Later, cream separators and chamar-making kits were distributed among the trainees, it added.
