SDRF, police rescue 6 stranded people

PASIGHAT, 8 Jan: A joint team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Mebo police in East Siang district rescued six individuals on Wednesday morning, who had been stranded in the middle of the Siang River near Bodak village due to a sudden rise in the water level following heavy rainfall on the night of Tuesday, police said.

The incident occurred when the individuals had gone to collect Tari around 8:25 pm.

The rescued persons have been identified as Opang Tamuk, Sompa Marpache of Renging village, and Punching Rai, Rajen Narzari, Santosh Chettry and Vijay Tamang of Raneghat, Pasighat, DSP Ayup Boko stated.

 Upon receiving information about the incident, a rescue team was formed under the supervision of the DSP, Mebo PS OC Inspector Akai Chama, and SDRF IC SI A. Barua. The team reached the site around 10:30 pm and launched a search operation using searchlights. However, the operation had to be suspended for the night due to darkness and ongoing rainfall. Despite this, the team was able to pinpoint the location of the stranded individuals.

The rescue operation resumed on Wednesday morning, with the team using a boat to successfully rescue all the stranded individuals, the DSP added.

East Siang SP Pankaj Lamba urged the public to refrain from venturing into risky areas without proper safety measures especially, during adverse weather conditions.

The SP also commended the SDRF and Mebo police for their swift response in rescuing the stranded individuals.
