Awareness prog on yak-rearing technologies

LEH, 26 May: Two hundred tribal livestock farmers from different parts of Bodhkharboo, Kargil and Nubra valley in Ladakh participated in an awareness programme themed ‘Demonstration of technologies for better production and healthcare management of yak and other highland livestock’, organised by Dirang (Arunachal Pradesh)-based National Research Centre on Yak (NRCY), in collaboration with the Leh & Kargil Animal Husbandry Department, at Kargil and Nubra valley from 21 to 26 May.

The programme focused on promotion of tribal farming community through adoption of scientific yak rearing practices covering management, healthcare and product processing. The farmers were educated on adopting technologies developed by the NRCY for improving animal production and economic returns.

Addressing the participants, NRCY senior scientist Dr Mokhtar Hussain explained the technologies of management, scientific feeding and healthcare of highland animals. The farmers were also made aware of the importance of vaccines for protection of highland animals against different bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases, and the hygienic aspects of clean milk production with value addition.

The farmers were encouraged to aggressively take up product processing and value addition, and to link them with ecotourism to make yak husbandry more remunerative.

Concentrated yak feed, gumboots, tarpaulins, solar lights, and mineral mixture, along with basic veterinary medicine were later provided to the farmers.
