RONO HILLS, 12 Aug: The Central Library and Rajiv Gandhi University’s (RGU) library and information science department on Tuesday celebrated Librarians’ Day to mark the birth anniversary of Padma Shri awardee Dr SR Ranganathan, the Father of Library Science in India.
Addressing the participants, RGU Library and Information Science Department Head (i/c) Dr Sudhir Kumar Jena highlighted the significance of Librarians’ Day and the enduring legacy of Dr Ranganathan in shaping the library profession in India.
Library and Information Science visiting Professor RN Mishra delivered an insightful talk on the life and work of Dr SR Ranganathan, tracing his journey from childhood through his education, professional career, and monumental contributions to the library profession and the nation.
On behalf of the first batch of students of the department, Giogi Pinch shared his experiences and expressed gratitude for being part of the newly established department.
RGU Registrar Dr NT Rikam commended the efforts of the department and the central library, encouraged the students to dedicate themselves to nation-building, and emphasised the crucial role libraries can play in the development of the state and the country.
RGU Vice-Chancellor Prof SK Nayak shared his experiences with libraries, congratulated the department and the students, and spoke about the importance of libraries as pillars of academic and cultural growth.
RGU Library & Information Science teaching assistant Dr Jaba Moni Das also spoke.
“The celebration served as a reminder of the timeless relevance of libraries and librarians in preserving, promoting, and disseminating knowledge for the betterment of society,” the RGU informed in a release.
