RUKSIN, Nov 26: Assam forest officials of Jonai, Assam have rescued an orphaned leopard cub from a house near Telam Railway Station at the Assam and Arunachal boundary on Sunday morning.
It is believed that the tiger cub came down from the nearby hill areas and entered into human habitation plains in search of food.
The male leopard cub was brought to Jonai by the forest officials and is currently under care and medical observation as the cub received minor injuries during rescue operation, the officials said.
The leopard cub will be released into the wild in Poba Reserve Forest (RF) when it is declared fit to be released, they said.
This is the second incident of rescuing tiger cubs in the area.
Earlier in June this year, the forest officials rescued another leopard cub from Dimou in the state boundary area. The cub was later released into Poba Reserved Forest.
The forest officials revealed existence of three tiger species, including leopards, leopard cats and jungle cats in the reserve forest along the Assam-Arunachal boundary area. They also claim movement of Royal Bengal tiger in Poba Reserve Forest time to time.
It is pertinent to mention here that the forest officials of Jonai claimed to have spotted pugmarks of Royal Bengal tiger in deep jungles of the reserved forest three days ago.
Meanwhile, the wildlife officials of Pasighat have started search operation following report of movement of a Royal Bengal Tiger in Poba Reserved Forest. They are also keeping contact with the Assam forest officials in order to locate the habitat.
Poba Reserve Forest on the right bank of Siang River is adjacent to Daying Ering Wildlife Sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh and there is a wildlife corridor linking the reserve forest with Daying Ering Sanctuary and Dibru Saikhuwa National park across the Brahmaputra.
