Legal awareness on child rights held

RUKSIN, 17 Aug: The All East Siang District Law Students’ Association (AESDLSA) in collaboration with Pro Bono Club (Nyaya Bandhu) on Tuesday organized a one day legal awareness programme on ‘Child rights’ and ‘Right to education’ at SDO’s Kebang hall here in East Siang district.

Pro Bono Club is an NGO, working under central government’s department of justice and set up at Pasighat based Apex Professional University.

Addressing the meeting as resource person, Club’s supervisor Dr Jyotshna Raj highlighted various aspects of child rights with reference to POCSO Act, 2012, child trafficking and child related crimes.

Saying that childhood and adolescence is the most risky period of life, she suggested the youngsters to report such incidents to their parents, elders or teachers for time-bound action against offenders.

Pro Bono’s nodal officer Ghana Saikia said that right to education now is one of the fundamental rights enshrined by the Constitution of India. He said that Article-21A of the Constitution after its 86th Amendment has directed the state to ensure compulsory education for the children.

Ruksin SDPO (Police) Token Saring, spoke on various child related crimes, while WASE (Women against Social Evils) president Yamik Dulom Darang, exhorted the young students to be aware of their rights and disclose any incident of abuse or harassment to their parents, teachers or the village heads in time.

AESDLSA’s president Arbi Taki and general secretary Lego Tayeng also spoke.

Around 150 young students from different primary and secondary schools of Ruksin block and school teachers participated in the programme.
