ITANAGAR, 30 Mar: A team of officers from Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday visited the School of Energy Science & Engineering at the IIT Guwahati (Assam) to study the effective low-cost solid waste management technologies developed by the institute.
The team, comprising Chief Conservator of Forests (Environment & Climate Change) Rajesh S, Chief Engineer Taring Darang, Executive Engineer Nich Jacob, and Assistant Engineer Marpek Riram of the urban development department, along with environment forests & climate change department scientist Y Johnson Singh participated in deliberations over innovative approaches towards solid waste management, including waste-to-energy technologies, wet waste composting techniques, and advanced recycling methods.
They visited IIT Guwahati’s state-of-the-art research facilities and witnessed a demonstration of waste management technology there.
The technologies, such as standard briquetting machine, fixed-bed gasifiers, circulating fluidized gasifier, dual fluidized bed gasifier, pyrolyzer, biochars, anaerobic digesters and vermicomposting technology, have the potential to facilitate effective utilisation of organic waste, and provide value-added products, generate renewable energy, high-quality organic manure and cooking gas, in addition to creating green livelihood opportunities and associated income streams.
The team will submit its report to the urban development department here to initiate pilot demonstration projects, “as well as to facilitate capacity development towards addressing solid waste management challenges in the state,” according to a release.
