ITANAGAR, Mar 10: The State unit of North East Human Rights Organization (NEHRO), in a memorandum addressed to Namsai Deputy Commissioner has appealed for resettlement of the flood affected villagers of Mabira, Morapat and Mazgaon villages with no further delay.
In the memorandum, the NEHRO stated that the devastating flood in 2004 has completely devastated the entire topography of the three villages under Chongkham circle in Namsai district causing heavy damages to human settlements, crops and domestic animals.
Though the three villages are no longer suitable for human settlement, but, still the villagers are compelled to live there with fear from impending danger, it said.
According to the physical verification report, the memorandum said, the three villages are always in danger as the entire area is surrounded by the mighty Lohit River.
“After the devastating flood, the victims had settled near Tengapani Forest Gate, but they were directed to shift to another place by the government. And accordingly, they were shifted to Kahi-Nala area and are living in the area till date,” informed NEHRO.
It said that the affected people of the villages had made a proposal for their rehabilitation in consultation with the District Administration and State Forest Department under Madhuban and Kahi Nala jurisdictions during 2007. Accordingly, the then Namsai ADC, had asked the Forest Department to submit the new proposal for rehabilitation. But till today, there is no positive result in the case, the memorandum said.
NEHRO appealed to authority concerned to expedite the process of rehabilitation of the affected people as well as provide all necessary measures for their livelihood at the present location Kahi Nala area under Tengapani Reserve Forest in Namsai district.
It also urged the Namsai DC to take up the matter with the ministry concerned at the earliest.
