Arunachal Pradesh Handloom and Handicrafts Policy

The Arunachal Pradesh Handloom and Handicrafts Policy-2025 has been launched as part of the 11th National Handloom Day celebrations. Textile and Handicrafts Minister Nyato Dukam, while unveiling the policy, emphasized that handloom is not just a cultural asset – it also holds significant economic promise. The policy provides a roadmap to guide and support our weavers as they move forward.

The launch of this policy is being hailed as a major milestone in the state’s efforts to empower weavers and artisans, while also preserving its rich tribal heritage.

The policy includes the creation of a database for weavers and artisans; the establishment of raw material and tool banks; improved access to credit; promotion of research and development; e-commerce and digital initiatives; the ‘One Tribe, One Weave’ initiative; a comprehensive livelihood promotion scheme; and the legal protection of indigenous designs and knowledge. All of these measures aim to unlock the immense economic and cultural potential of the sector.

The policy’s launch could be remarkable if well-planned and has the potential to significantly impact the lives of artisans, providing them with sustainable livelihood options. Many artisans currently rely on traditional art and crafts for their economic sustenance.

An effective marketing strategy could be a game-changer, as obtaining traditional weaves and handloom products at an affordable price is becoming increasingly difficult due to limited availability, often linked to marketing challenges. Intensive training and skill upgrading should also be an integral part of the policy, as the art is gradually being lost across tribes and generations.
